Our friends over at PointCloud Media just did a proof-of-concept for a project called “Raylight4D”, a really cool projectionmapping system for pools. Although details are necessarily quiet, Jack Hattingh explains, “The test was done with a ##### projector and the most beautiful thing is that the ambient light above the water does not affect the image.. the contrast ratio is pretty good and you can get good results with less projectors. 3D projections on water are typically cheaper, since they require less projectors compared with 3D building projections; and typically, no permits are required to use pool sites for projection mapping. Essentially, pools are also more conducive to projection mapping because of their low ambient lighting, color, and ubiquity.”
Mermaids, sharks, disappearing sand….pools make a perfect mapping surface! Next step- motion tacking interactivity???

Another really cool project from our friends at NYX Visual- ‘Electric Bit’. Louis De Castro says they developed the concept to be shot on the back wall of a new very futuristic venue in Paris: l’Electric. “Our setup was done using a custom built quartz composer rig. It’s based on the “Tracked User” functionality of the kinect camera, importing only the silhouettes of the persons moving in front of it. The feed was pixelized according to the wall sculpture grid then used as a mask to play media content and interact with various effects (color, speed etc…). We then remapped the video feed using MadMapper. Creating a new surface for every pixel then mapping it to each pyramid, we covered the maximum space our video projector could provide. The result was a 8bit looking tracking funhouse installation played by the audience of the night.”
The incredibly inventive folks over at White Kanga recently did this huge industrial for CTL Logistics. Utilizing eight 22k projectors and Touchdesigner, they transported the audience on an intergalactic themed presentation, and then fed live video of the entertainment into the animated video frames. Yikes! When do you ever get a chance to see the likes of Joanie Lemercier, Kyle McDonald, and Joel Gethin Lewis in the same room demonstrating real-time video artwork? At the ScreenLab Residency that’s where! Through the ScreenLab 0×02 residency, artists Kyle McDonald, Joanie Lemercier and Joel Gethin Lewis worked together with students and researchers at MediaCityUK and an advanced technology center on the main campus (Dig this place: The Centre for Visual Environments). It features the Octave, a truly astounding setup which is detailed HERE. Together they developed interactive artworks that provided a unique experience for each visitor by creating artificial worlds using sound and visuals that react to their movement.
The results of the residency were unveiled at a launch event on Wednesday 5 December which formed part of the University’s As Yet Impossible series of lectures, bringing together future thinkers to challenge audiences and give them a glimpse of how science and the arts can combine to shape the world. The really cool thing is that most of the work is openly available on Github- Here’s Kyle’s, Here’s Elliot Woods’ (curator and open source contributor to vvvv). Just got a note from Wilderbe, a dance troupe that uses projectionmapping techniques to enhance their performance. Looks like they are running an IndieGoGo campaign to raise funds for a projector purchase. Let’s see….projection, dance, performing arts+technology….how could we resist? Have a look at their showreel and campaign vid below and, if you’re so inclined, head over to there IndieGoGo page to throw’em a buck or two. As we all know, this business isn’t necessarily the cheapest and creation takes effort- financially and emotionally. Director Nova Han would be most appreciative.

Artisan, part of UVA, used d3 to map, simulate and output content onto sculptural LED tunnels for USA telecom company Sprint’s new cinema announcement. It’s a great peek into what it takes to shoot a quality product. David Bajt and Luke Malcolm give some insight into the process….and I guess since I’m a Sprint user- at least I know my money is going towards something a little more than person’s pocket. Plus- who doesn’t love the sight of a crazy-huge jib poking a room chock full of technology with a pricey camera on the end? A new interactive on-screen cinema experience created by Sprint in partnership with “Team Sprint” encourages moviegoers to turn off their mobile device in exchange for a custom mobile phone “dream”. More than 1,000 NCM Movie Theaters will show the experience on nearly 18,000 screens as part of Sprint’s courtesy-message sponsorship that asks moviegoers to turn off their phones prior to the start of a movie. From our colleagues at MIDASpaces comes a call for support. They are hoping to put together a new piece entitled CODES for the Absolut Fringe 2012. You’ll recall MIDASpaces from a previous post- the Dublin based collective now needs our help to fund their latest endeavor, CODES. Gifts for funding can be made at :fund:it.ie and there are a number of levels with corresponding gifts. Knowing the expense of our little corner of the arts world, I can appreciate their need for some decent funding. Let’s help them get off to a good start and see what comes out of it!

Working collaboratively, CODES will challenge how far we can take digital augmentation within a dance and live music performance.

I recently came across the work of Aleksandra Dulic and was blown away! Aleks has been designing and creating animation/video artwork for over 15 years, with various artists. This piece, from 2008, is a fascinating blend of spatial audio along with motion-tracked video output. With Kenneth Newby and Martin Gotfrit, they created a vast, fragmented projection space that reacts when participants walk nearby… showing various body parts of over 100 different people from all walks of life.

Projectionmapping on a large scale suffers from ‘instant fame’ syndrome. While it’s a really cool and innovative technology, the fact is- if you’ve seen it once, you’ve seen it all. Then the game changes when someone gets really creative with an existing technology and mixes it with large-scale projection. So it is that NuFormer presents “mocap mapping”, a first-of-its-kind combination of 3D video mapping projection and live motion capture technology. One of the great things about running Projectionfreak is that I get to connect to all kinds of creative minds in the world of technology. Recently I ran a few pieces that utilized the work of Flightphase-their installation of a huge, interactive video wall at the University of Dayton, and an interactive museum exhibit at the National Maritime Museum in the UK.

Flightphase, along with HUSH studios and 160over90, lent their talents to the creation of an incredible interactive projection wall featured at the University of Dayton.
