You know we’re fans of architecture and also Luftwerk. But the duo of Petra Bachmaier and Sean Gallardo are teaming up again to illuminate the iconic Farnsworth House by Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe. You may recall Luftwerk’s treatment of Falling Water…a projectionmapping treat on one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s seminal works that we featured here. Projecting onto highly valued, protected works of architectural magnificence is not inexpensive. Luftwerk has initiated a Kickstarter campaign called INsite, to help fund the Farnsworth project so if you feel compelled, head on over to their site and kick a few bucks towards it. The Farnsworth House is one of my personal faves in the mid-century lexicon, in fact the house I grew up in closely resembles the lines. They do good work and your help would be most appreciated.

INsite intends to bring a new experience to the Farnsworth House that will attract new audiences and celebrate the lasting relevance of the architecture. By choosing Kickstarter as a way to support INsite, Luftwerk hopes to excite the community and build the audience for the fall installation. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for Mies enthusiasts and architecture lovers to see this icon of modern architecture in a new light.
Luftwerk’s fundraising goal is $25,000, which will support project development and equipment needs, as well as the installation and operation of the exhibit. Ten video projectors, encased in weatherproof housing, will display a seamless composition that highlights the structural minimalism of the Farnsworth House and its glass walls from the exterior to the interior. The video installation will be accompanied by an original music composition by Owen Clayton Condon, a Chicago based percussionist and composer and former member of Third Coast Percussion.
Luftwerk has delighted and illuminated viewers with a history of completing major commissions on landmark architecture. In 2011 they illuminated one of America’s most extraordinary buildings: Fallingwater, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. “Celebrating 75 years of Art in Nature” was followed by a site-specific video installation “Luminous Field” (2012) that transformed Millennium Park into a digital playground, attracting over 65,000 visitors in only ten nights.”

Just some tests with realtime interactive lasers (this time a 4W RGB, 90Kpps), finger tracking, ilda, etherdream dac, leapmotion, openframeworks, ofxEtherdream, ofxIlda, ofxLeapMotion and a DJI Fantom thrown in for good measure.
I’ve played with a Leap…it’s veeeerrryyy promising! Nothing beyond the developer stages just yet, but this takes it to a whole new level! Nice work Memo!
Calibre UK has further strengthened its LEDView530 scaler/switcher with the addition of new firmware for user selectable and variable picture-in-picture (PIP) flexibility. For all of you LED freaks out there, this ought to be a welcome upgrade. The LEDview 530 has a street price of $10,999 so it’s low-cost insurance for a great image!

“The new PIP function of the LEDView530 scaler/switcher adds the functionality of expensive windowing solutions available from other manufacturers in the market today, but at an affordable price,” explains Tim Brooksbank, Chairman at Calibre UK.
PIP is used for the composition of a single displayed image comprised of background content, plus a second windowed input channel, viewed on one single LED videowall. Typically the background content will be computer generated. The LEDView530supports virtually all sources including Mac and PC and the PIP content is a video feed either direct from a camera or via a vision mixer, typically over 3G or HD-SDI.
“The firmware update is considerably important for smaller installs requiring variable PIP sizes and backgrounds, particularly at smaller facilities such as sports grounds where it gives LEDView530 a significant advantage in allowing users to generate a combined image, with advanced features such as pixel-accurate PIP sizing and PIP fade in/out transitions,” adds Brooksbank.

Another really cool project from our friends at NYX Visual- ‘Electric Bit’. Louis De Castro says they developed the concept to be shot on the back wall of a new very futuristic venue in Paris: l’Electric. “Our setup was done using a custom built quartz composer rig. It’s based on the “Tracked User” functionality of the kinect camera, importing only the silhouettes of the persons moving in front of it. The feed was pixelized according to the wall sculpture grid then used as a mask to play media content and interact with various effects (color, speed etc…). We then remapped the video feed using MadMapper. Creating a new surface for every pixel then mapping it to each pyramid, we covered the maximum space our video projector could provide. The result was a 8bit looking tracking funhouse installation played by the audience of the night.”
When I was a kid growing up on the West Coast, the hot ticket in shoes was to own a pair of Vans. They ultimately became the de-facto skate/surf/grunge wear shoe-of-choice when they came out with the slip-on version (still are AFAIK). The beauty of Vans at that point (early 80′s) was that they were still quite boutique and you could pick and choose different colors/fabrics for the various designs they had. If you were reeeaallllly cool, you could take (as I did) your own fabric in and have them make a pair for you.

I have a friend experimenting with low-rez video (of the tube variety) and I said I’d look into some ideas…little did I know it would lead me to Chris Shen’s fascinating work- Infra. A TV made from discarded remote controls. There’s so many great things about this piece that it’s hard to know where to start. Hacking, tinkering, re-purposing, and a smidge of nostalgia all rolled into one glorious low-rez display that has to be seen with infrared goggles. Love it! Personally, I use the Harmony 720 (actually three of them) and though I tried really hard- I could not find one in the photos. When I purchase a new monitor or TV, the remote is usually the first thing I toss- knowing full-well there are better alternatives out there. Kind of makes me think why the manufacturer bothers at all with a lame remote, but that’s a discussion for another day. The whole thing is wired to a Peggy 2, courtesy Evil Mad Scientist Labratories. Projectionmapping 1.0 for Beginners
presented in collaboration with Chika, this 2 day workshop serves as a comprehensive introduction to methods for creating projection mapping. The tools used in the workshop are MadMapper and Modul8. The students will get fully-functional 30-day trial versions of the software to create a collaborative projection mapping installation for the end of class. This workshop is intended for the students who want to learn how to develop projection mapping projects for future events, art installations, and performances.

Devin Wambolt over at DCBolt Productions gave me the heads-up on this crazy nightclub install they just completed. The club is Castle Nightclub in Chicago and they premiered the system for a huge NYE bash this year. Devin reports: “We are using three different types of LED’s in this system, (aside from the house lights) LED panels, LED strips, and LED modules. Our LED strips are (32x) SMD5050 LED pixels per meter, our Modules are (5x) SMD5050 LEDs per pixel, the LED panels are 6 millimeter pitch SMD2835 LED pixels. The led strips and modules are run by MADRIX Ultimate for real-time dynamic playback. The LED panel screens are being driven by a custom configured Resolume Arena setup.
Some pretty impressive work, and I’ll be sure to check it out next time I’m in Chicago!
Brett Jones, over at Projection Mapping Central sent me a really neat project he worked on as an intern at Redmond. Microsoft’s ‘IllumiRoom’ is a proof-of-concept system for augmenting the area around a display with projected visualizations. Gamers- take note! Yikes…what’s going to happen when I use this with 3D glasses????
SOTA Creative drives game changing experience for Subaru Australia.
Following product supply challenges that resulted from the tragic Japanese earthquake and tsunami, Subaru Australia needed a game changing communication experience to re-motivate their Dealer Network and Launch two new models. As long term experiential agency for Subaru Australia, the team at SOTA conceived and produced a one-off experience incorporating a “Virtual Drive”, where all 240 people in the audience became passengers in a unique 360 degree cinematic creation. On over 125 metres of continuous screen, a Full High Definition projection system took our audience on a drive through some of Australia’s iconic landscape and environments.
SOTA Creative conceived and produced two major 360 degree cinematic experiences, one each for the reveals of the Impreza and the XV, plus continually changing 360 degree visual effects for environment design and speaker support for the duration of the evening. The images were created and edited to be delivered at Full High Definition (22,000 pixels wide and 1080 pixels high). The virtual drive experience was shot using a purpose built 9 camera rig which was mounted on a custom-fitted Film vehicle. Post production was done both in Los Angeles and Sydney and converted by SOTA to be projected through 12 Christie Projectors (HD-10k) and a Dataton Watchout Control system. Haycom provided the Christies and the staging/rigging.

After a worldwide search, SOTA Creative sourced a Los Angeles based camera system and rig capable of delivering 22,000 pixel width 360 degree images, developed a post production process to deliver the finished programs to a Watchout controlled system and then to 12 matched Christie projectors. Social Animal used the incredible SA360 rig to deliver the goods. (Make sure to check out their site for some cool interactive loops and extra footage- and some pretty amazing case studies).The continuous audience surround screen surface was a challenge in itself, needing to be floor to ceiling, while allowing “openings” for audience arrival, F&B service and the revealing of Vehicles and Entertainment. The LA team from Social Animal came to Australia for literally a 3 day shoot. We also used a still shoot of the interior of the car to produce the interior of the car and then this was added as the foreground of the video. We then had the challenge of doing rescaling up to 22,00 pixel width and had to crop it to our Aspect Ratio requirements and cut it up to suit the 12 Christie projectors (12 movies playing together using the ‘Watch out System”. And before all of this could happen we had to produce the foreground plate with the ‘interior of the car’. We produced this as a 22,000 pixels wide by 1080 high all played in full high definition. The end result was projection 106 metres around all the audience. Notice, also that the ‘rear view mirror’ had the same image as the ‘rear window’.
And here I thought that was just my favorite bar reply….
Netherlands-based media firm Circus Family combined forces with Jurlights and came up with this huge 360-degree projectionmapping at Gashouder Amsterdam. The gig was for Amsterdam Couture house, Scotch and Soda, for the launch of their 2013 line. Using four Hippo HD’s they were able to pipe content to ten Barco HD20′s mounted in a ring in the center. They used the ScreenWarp feature to cut the roundness and then threw in a couple of Hippo Critters with a 16×16 DVI matrix to finish it off. Technician Menno Broere tells me they didn’t even have to blend the projectors…just masked out some physical attributes. That’s how we like it- simple and clean. So many times this type of technology is ‘over done’ from the production side, so it’s nice to see people keeping to the oldest axiom in show biz- Keep It Simple Stupid.
Celebrate the holidays the Seeper way! The BBC invited the nation to celebrate the start of its 2012 Christmas Lights in a techno-driven finale at the closing of the One Show Live on BBC one. Clips taken from popular BBC programmes such as Strictly Come Dancing and Doctor Who were reworked by seeper into a two- minute, three-dimensional BBC Christmas experience to kick- start the festive celebrations in a way not seen before. “Growing up in the UK the BBC has always been central to Christmas for me”, said seeper’s founder, Evan Grant. “It’s a pleasure to use such an iconic building as our canvas. This is a great opportunity to celebrate Christmas the seeper way.
They used five of the Barco HDQ-2K 40, Barco’s giant 3D-capable projector in a specially built FOH rig to blast through the infamous London fog. Units supplied by XL Video, natch. XL recently invested heavily in Barco’s latest super high brightness projectors and these were no doubt part of that batch. The proprietary “SeeperServer” was used for playback of media.

I came across a really great looking mapping project from Dub Video Connection recently. They are a multidisciplinary studio, based in Lisbon, Portugal, dedicated to multimedia arts and interactivities, since 1997. They are committed to develop ideas and projects in Film Direction and Production, Graphic and Motion Design, Visual Identities for artists and festivals, Video Mapping and 3D Visuals, Interactve Systems, Technical Implementation and Visuals Creation and Performance. Dub Video Connection uses its skills, allied with the most recent technology, to blend visual narratives and visual identities and bring them to the most demanding audiences.
DVC explains about the piece, Panoramic Room 2, “In this project we used two Panasonic DS100 projectors, 10k therefore, as you can see on the video.
For the playback we used Dataton Watchout and connected to another computer for the live drawing there was a member of the team drawing with total freedom using Alchemy over the whole projection. We can say that the biggest input on “hardware” was in fact the black tape on the wall, which gave to the image that amazing contrast that we can find in the medieval stained glass. Every line and surface was mapped and operated during the show, an audiovisual experience, with sound design and music to involve the audience in that specific environment (rain, birds, lightnings, etc). This live performance wasn’t a finished product, and in this very next weekend we’ll have a another one in the same place with the same environment, but with inputs, new visuals, contents and some narrative. This project was definitely implicated in the specific architecture of that space (House of Music, by dutch architect Rem Koolhaas). This project was created as an hostage of that space, as an experimental and paisagistic approach inviting everyone to sit down and enjoy the imaginary and surrealistic transfiguration of the room.”

It’s hard to say how Izzy has affected me in my work- it’s the first app I used for video manipulation, and the one that kept me hooked- but it’s so much more than that. NEW YORK, October 23, 2012: The World Technology Network, in association with CNN, TIME, Technology Review, and Science, awarded composer and media artist Mark Coniglio the 2012 World Technology Award in the category of the Arts at a ceremony at the Time & Life Building in New York City.
The award recognizes “innovative work of the greatest likely long-term significance.” Coniglio’s award in the arts category recognized his contribution as a composer, media artist and co-founder of the performance group Troika Ranch; as the creator of the interactive media-software Isadora; and for his contribution as a teacher who has shared his aesthetic vision and technical know-how through innumerable workshops across the globe.
Of his award, Coniglio said “I’m thrilled to receive this wonderful honor. I’ve spent my life exploring the intersection of art and media, trying to find ways to use computer technology to more deeply express the human experience. To have that journey acknowledged by the WTN is truly gratifying.” The new WTN Fellows and Corporate Members were officially inducted into the WTN membership during a gala ceremony at the Time & Life Building in New York City, where the winners were announced. The Awards gala occurred at the close of the World Technology Summit, a two-day “thought leadership” conference held in association with the WTN’s partner organizations.
The World Technology Awards have been presented by the WTN since 2000, as a way to honor those in 20 different categories of science and technology and related fields. The annual World Technology Awards nomination process is an intensive global one, lasting many months. The Award nominee pool this year of over 600 nominees came from three sources: names put forward by the WTN Fellows (winners and finalists from previous annual Award cycles in the individual Award categories); research by the WTN staff; and, to a lesser extent, from nominations from individuals and companies themselves.

Yikes! When do you ever get a chance to see the likes of Joanie Lemercier, Kyle McDonald, and Joel Gethin Lewis in the same room demonstrating real-time video artwork? At the ScreenLab Residency that’s where! Through the ScreenLab 0×02 residency, artists Kyle McDonald, Joanie Lemercier and Joel Gethin Lewis worked together with students and researchers at MediaCityUK and an advanced technology center on the main campus (Dig this place: The Centre for Visual Environments). It features the Octave, a truly astounding setup which is detailed HERE. Together they developed interactive artworks that provided a unique experience for each visitor by creating artificial worlds using sound and visuals that react to their movement.
The results of the residency were unveiled at a launch event on Wednesday 5 December which formed part of the University’s As Yet Impossible series of lectures, bringing together future thinkers to challenge audiences and give them a glimpse of how science and the arts can combine to shape the world. The really cool thing is that most of the work is openly available on Github- Here’s Kyle’s, Here’s Elliot Woods’ (curator and open source contributor to vvvv). - Please notice that the new handling of stock assets will create a folder “c:\coolux\content\stock assets” on your system. The Stock Assets installer file itself can be found right underneath the Pandoras Box Rev7832 file in the appropriate section in the download sector.
- Breakout panes
Right click on panes/tabs for possibility to breakout separate panes out of the main frame
- Matrix Patcher brushes
Create patch in new matrix patcher and save, drag .pbx file as asset and drop it on any(!) output, real time update via “update patch” in matrix patcher.
Select an output as preview and choose “select matrix mask” for matrix preview
- Image sequences
Right click on project, choose “create image sequence” and then attach or right click on folder in asset tree and choose “import as image sequence”
- Image converter, Transparency in mpeg-videos
The Image Converter is able to render a mpeg video from an image sequence. In version 5.3 it includes the feature to generate a black-and-white mask in addition to the main video. You may choose to include the b/w information side-by-side like, resulting in one video. In Pandoras Box, the Masking effect “Alpha Left Right” (respectively “Alpha Top Bottom”) separates the two videos again and renders them while applying a keying effect to the main video.This workflow leads to transparency (alpha channel) in mpg-videos and saves far more performance than other codec solutions.

Choose from “device types” and set the key for commands which are sent to the Widget Designer
- Content as interface: layer picking
With the feature “Layer Picking” in version 5.3, content interaction has gone one step further. It is now possible to recalculate the mouse position within the preview or even the client´s fullscreen window and thus recognize what layer is touched and where exactly on the layer the mouse is located. A layer has become a true interface.
- Network card selection
Select a defined network card in “configuration” for communication of master and clients (restart the application after selection).
In the matrix patcher you can choose another network card to send Art-Net data
- “Layer routing to render passes”
Lets you route layers to only specific outputs and gives you the possibility to reorder the “Video Processing Pipeline”
“Black level compensation”
Enables you to adjust the black level within softedge projections. From now on, layers can explicitly be set to be included or excluded by the first Pandoras Box render pass and thus be placed outside from the warp / keystone / softedge structure. This setting is available in the layer’s Inspector.

It’s hard not to like a Deadmau5 event….even harder when it involves production, video projection, and LED on a large scale. Last year, Deadmau5 did a gig on the side of the Millbank Tower to launch the Lumia 800, and it looks like they outdid that by a longshot with this event. Lotsa projection. Lotsa LED.

Winning in the Attraction category, the ride puts visitors in the driver’s seat for a thrilling race through the world of Disney-Pixar’s “Cars.”
Electrosonic’s close working relationship with Universal Studios has resulted in another award winning attraction. Electrosonic handled AV system design and integration for another winner in the Attraction category: “Transformers: The Ride 3D” at Universal Studios Singapore and Universal Studios Hollywood. The attraction is an immersive, next-generation thrill ride that puts participants in the middle of the ultimate war zone with the famed Transformers.
Winning in the Museum category is Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame in Calgary, for which Electrosonic provided AV system design and integration services. The dynamic new facility celebrates Canada’s sports heroes and legends in a dozen galleries with compelling media and displays.
Working for WET Design, Electrosonic performed the projection system design and integration for WET’s contribution to Living Screen display at the “Big-O Experience” water sculpture at Yeosu 2012 International Expo in Korea, a winner in the Event category. The unique multimedia installation fused a breakthrough concept and cutting-edge technology to dazzle visitors.
Finally, Electrosonic was hired by Thinkwell Group of Burbank, CA to provide design, engineering and installation services for the “Warner Bros. Studio Tour – The Making of Harry Potter” in London, which netted honors in the Studio Tour category. At this venue, visitors experience the “making of” process used to bring the extraordinary characters, worlds and events of the books alive on the big screen.

CHICAGO—(Nov. 14, 2012)— Since launching in 2010, the principals of design-focused production studio Leviathan have collaborated with many leading agencies, brands and filmmakers to render scores of sensational projects across all markets and industries, earning award recognition along the way from the Association of Independent Music, Communication Arts Magazine, the AICP, The One Club, and the Themed Entertainment Association. Several of those projects have involved Waveplant, the personal brand of composer and sound designer Joel Corelitz. Today, along with Corelitz, Leviathan’s principals are very proud to announce a new creative alliance between their two companies.
“Our alliance is born from the idea that creating audio and visuals should be part of the same process, not something we seek to unite afterwards,” explained Corelitz, who has earned rave reviews internationally for his original scores and sound designs for high-profile videogame, cinema and commercial projects. “Together, we want to focus even more on handling projects that cannot be done any other way.”
Among the sensational efforts that united Leviathan and Waveplant in the past are major projects for HP, Dodge Dart and Kelley Blue Book, to name but a few. In particular, the two HP projects produced for Designkitchen (ed. link here on PF) promoting HP’s TouchSmart computers may represent the perfect application of Leviathan’s and Waveplant’s talents.
“For those projects, our team at Leviathan started with multiple layers of surface-mapped real-time animation, paired with a variety of small and large environments and custom-built sculptures,” Hutson said. “From Waveplant, the contributions included a constantly evolving original music score, split into various tracks and instruments with controllable filters, where the audience was allowed to control it all via touch interfaces on HP TouchSmart computers. We were all involved in these projects from the earliest discussions, and we feel that they represent the type of phenomenal audiovisual approaches that result in projects people get super-excited about. By virtue of this new alliance with Waveplant, we hope to increase our involvement in such forward-looking and innovative experiential projects.”
Both HP “Play Big” projects were finalists in the 2012 One Club Entertainment Awards, as well as being shortlisted in the 2012 AICP Show’s Next Awards.

Right here in my hometown! In fact, I got a peek at it before opening night and it looked cartoonishly huge even without being powered up. The new scoreboard features twin 1080p HD video screens (Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Vision™ 6mm LED), each measuring 50 feet long – extending nearly foul line to foul line – by 21 feet high, about 2,800 square feet in total space. In addition to the HD screens running the length of the court, the rectangular scoreboard is capped by a pair of 25 feet by 14 feet full 1080p HD video screens facing each baseline. Completing the interior portion of the Bankers Life Fieldhouse upgrade is a pair of LED video displays, one in each balcony end zone. The displays measure 23’ by 10’ and provide fans with stats, replays, and other game-related information.
Through ANC Sports’ VisionSOFT operating system, the new audio and video upgrades work with the arena’s existing LED ribbon and digital courtside signage systems.
ANC also updated the aging audio system, head end and broadcast control room. The new control room was built out complete with a full 3G broadcast infrastructure with 1080P signals and production equipment to provide unprecedented image quality. ANC’s unique 64-bit operating system maximizes the clarity of the scoreboard as the operating system does not scale its content, enabling the video screens to display 1:1 resolution.
