The following is a review I did for PLSN magazine in June. It’s quite the projector and I was able to clip some quick video together as well.
The problem with new technology and gear is that you usually only get to put your hands on it the day before a gig, or worse, actually ON the gig. I’ll admit- under duress is usually the best way to learn a piece of gear, but not exactly the most stress-free activity in the world. So I was delighted to be able to get my hands on the Barco HDX W20 Flex actually IN a shop and not under any time gun or a client breathing down my neck.

Software so easy, it removes all artistic skill….
I know, there are a lot of people that this new piece of software will piss off.
I know- it’s been a while. The summer, sadly, has gone. I pretty much worked and relaxed and didn’t pay too much attention to the blog. Life is like that- hit it hard in some areas, lay low in others. But luckily those patterns are bound to shift and I feel change a’comin’. To start off, we just finished a multi-million dollar renovation to the theatre I work at…which sounds glorious on the surface. In reality, it was replacement of the seats and carpet, addition of air conditioning to the tech areas, and a lot of paint and roofing. Not at all what you’d think from a gear perspective, but we did get a kick-ass sound system out of the deal- details forthcoming….
But about the PODCAST! I’d toyed around with the idea of other media for a while but the opportunity never really presented itself and being a video guy, my heart wasn’t in it. But along came George Tucker from AV Nation with just enough idea and wax to spark me and viola! A podcast! But what the heck would anyone want to listen to? Projection stuff of course!
In the first of what I hope will be a series of casts, I interviewed Bryan Dodson (along with Michelle Dodson and Brian Blessinger) of Integrated Visions. You’ve seen them here before….they’ve done all manner of projectionmapping projects and curated an art show that used projectionmapping as the primary medium. I was completely honored to use the interview for the inaugural run of the Projectionfreak Podcast. Much thanks go to the IVP team for putting up with my schedule and really shedding some light on a fascinating subject. AV Nation has a ton of other podcasts as well with a wide range of projection related topics so be sure to give them a listen.

Check out this recent vid from the venerable Memo Akten of Marshmallow Laser Feast. Just some tests with realtime interactive lasers (this time a 4W RGB, 90Kpps), finger tracking, ilda, etherdream dac, leapmotion, openframeworks, ofxEtherdream, ofxIlda, ofxLeapMotion and a DJI Fantom thrown in for good measure.
I’ve played with a Leap…it’s veeeerrryyy promising! Nothing beyond the developer stages just yet, but this takes it to a whole new level! Nice work Memo!
Big reminder- Form and Substance: Projection Mapping in Contemporary Art, the first group exhibition in the United States dedicated exclusively to artists working with projection mapping as a medium- is this Friday. If you’re in the NYC area and you’re a fan, get to this exhibition!
In addition to the already outstanding line-up (including Davy and Kristin McGuire, John Ensor Parker, Joanie Lemercier), they’ve added two new artists to the roster: Joel Fitzpatrick is a fine artist, fashion designer, interior designer, lighting designer, and production designer. He will be presenting three works, including a collaboration with New York based painter and graffiti artist Adam Dare.
The exhibition opens Friday, May 10 at 6 PM at the Gowanus Ballroom at 55 9th Street in Gowanus, Brooklyn. The opening party is from 6 PM to 10 PM, and entry is free.
There will be a $10 cover charge starting at 10 PM, with Percussion Lab residents Nooka Jones and Archie Pelago playing till 4 AM. Proceeds from the door go to benefit the Gowanus Ballroom, which is still recovering from damage incurred during Hurricane Sandy.

TED talks are all the rage- and this one made my Monday! John Ensor Parker is a projection artist who recently did CODEX Dynamic at the DUMBO Artsfest. His work is pretty fascinating and this video gives just a little glimpse into the process behind making a large-scale work like CODEX happen. Yeah, yeah…we all know it takes servers and projectors and lots of cable- but John emphasizes the importance of knowing where our medium came from….we owe a lot to the past. NYX Visual Label has done some pretty impressive work in the last year, and they’ve expanded their studio offerings with NYX Atelier, focusing on the design and production of permanent digital art installs and light devices for private and public clients in Europe. Louis de Castro tells me “LIGHTBOX is a semi-modular, custom build LED ceiling that was designed by NYX Atelier for the reopening of Paris underground music venue “Panic Room” in January 2013. LIGHTBOX was developed by NYX Atelier along with Vincent Coutelin, our technical director, and Romain Belloche, our light designer, both overseeing the fabrication and visual programming aspects of the installation.
Thanks to Vincent we had the chance to travel to Shenzhen, China to purchase all the parts and electronics required but also to visit the fantastic factories and suppliers that now allow us to be more flexible than ever on the products and technologies we decide to use on each project.
The development of the installation also featured a fullfiling partnership with young French company, Chromateq, that supplied us with the DMX controllers and LED Player Software offering great control and customization on a simple package.
Not having the possibility budget wise to create a completely new designed software and controller we turned to them for providing a complete solution that would allow us to concentrate on the design, technical sourcing and fabrication but also provide great tools for developing rich content following the artistic vision for the piece.”

Finally a review that I should’ve thought of. I don’t care about lumens, features, resolutions, lamp life, blahblahblah….I want to know if I can drive my truck over your projector! A couple of things strike me about this video. One- that DPI has a 20k that is small enough to drive over, and two- the International Sales and Marketing for DP drives the same truck as I do! Woo-hoo! When DPI sends me a unit to test, I too can drive over it with complete confidence. It’s no secret that we’re big DPI fans here at Projectionfreak. I use two of their Lightning 35hd’s all the time and they are outstanding. DPI is stepping up their rental and staging projectors with the Titan Super Quad 20k. It’s got 4 UHP lamps that can theoretically pull 8,000 hours of service, dual DVI, 3g-SDI, and HDMI 1.4 inputs, multimode warp and edge-blend, and an intelligent lens mount that can memorize positioning from .67 to 11.2:1. To participate, all you have to do is fire up Resolume and go crazy with the sources, effects and blend modes. Make combinations that you didn’t think were possible. Stack effects as high as wedding cake to make something totally new out of that Solid Color. Flip the order of the blend modes and see what comes out. Above all, have fun with it!
The only rule is simple: you can only use the built-in effects and sources of Resolume. No still images, videos or webcam footage.

Projectionmapping 1.0 for Beginners
presented in collaboration with Chika, this 2 day workshop serves as a comprehensive introduction to methods for creating projection mapping. The tools used in the workshop are MadMapper and Modul8. The students will get fully-functional 30-day trial versions of the software to create a collaborative projection mapping installation for the end of class. This workshop is intended for the students who want to learn how to develop projection mapping projects for future events, art installations, and performances.

Devin Wambolt over at DCBolt Productions gave me the heads-up on this crazy nightclub install they just completed. The club is Castle Nightclub in Chicago and they premiered the system for a huge NYE bash this year. Devin reports: “We are using three different types of LED’s in this system, (aside from the house lights) LED panels, LED strips, and LED modules. Our LED strips are (32x) SMD5050 LED pixels per meter, our Modules are (5x) SMD5050 LEDs per pixel, the LED panels are 6 millimeter pitch SMD2835 LED pixels. The led strips and modules are run by MADRIX Ultimate for real-time dynamic playback. The LED panel screens are being driven by a custom configured Resolume Arena setup.
Some pretty impressive work, and I’ll be sure to check it out next time I’m in Chicago!
Roberto Fazio joined forces with Joanie LeMercier in a projectionmapping workshop sponsored by Teleknoika. Looks like it happened in November, but through the magic of Vimeo and Projectionfreak, you too can see the action. The turnout really underscores the popularity and interest that this medium has enjoyed the past year or so.
And here I thought that was just my favorite bar reply….
Netherlands-based media firm Circus Family combined forces with Jurlights and came up with this huge 360-degree projectionmapping at Gashouder Amsterdam. The gig was for Amsterdam Couture house, Scotch and Soda, for the launch of their 2013 line. Using four Hippo HD’s they were able to pipe content to ten Barco HD20′s mounted in a ring in the center. They used the ScreenWarp feature to cut the roundness and then threw in a couple of Hippo Critters with a 16×16 DVI matrix to finish it off. Technician Menno Broere tells me they didn’t even have to blend the projectors…just masked out some physical attributes. That’s how we like it- simple and clean. So many times this type of technology is ‘over done’ from the production side, so it’s nice to see people keeping to the oldest axiom in show biz- Keep It Simple Stupid.
Congratulations to Mark Coniglio, creator of Isadora, for a WTA win! It’s hard to say how Izzy has affected me in my work- it’s the first app I used for video manipulation, and the one that kept me hooked- but it’s so much more than that. The Isadora user community is pretty unique. If you haven’t had a chance, check out Troikatronix and give it a whirl. Chances are it’ll change the way you work.
NEW YORK, October 23, 2012: The World Technology Network, in association with CNN, TIME, Technology Review, and Science, awarded composer and media artist Mark Coniglio the 2012 World Technology Award in the category of the Arts at a ceremony at the Time & Life Building in New York City.
The award recognizes “innovative work of the greatest likely long-term significance.” Coniglio’s award in the arts category recognized his contribution as a composer, media artist and co-founder of the performance group Troika Ranch; as the creator of the interactive media-software Isadora; and for his contribution as a teacher who has shared his aesthetic vision and technical know-how through innumerable workshops across the globe.
Of his award, Coniglio said “I’m thrilled to receive this wonderful honor. I’ve spent my life exploring the intersection of art and media, trying to find ways to use computer technology to more deeply express the human experience. To have that journey acknowledged by the WTN is truly gratifying.” The new WTN Fellows and Corporate Members were officially inducted into the WTN membership during a gala ceremony at the Time & Life Building in New York City, where the winners were announced. The Awards gala occurred at the close of the World Technology Summit, a two-day “thought leadership” conference held in association with the WTN’s partner organizations.
The World Technology Awards have been presented by the WTN since 2000, as a way to honor those in 20 different categories of science and technology and related fields. The annual World Technology Awards nomination process is an intensive global one, lasting many months. The Award nominee pool this year of over 600 nominees came from three sources: names put forward by the WTN Fellows (winners and finalists from previous annual Award cycles in the individual Award categories); research by the WTN staff; and, to a lesser extent, from nominations from individuals and companies themselves.
The WTN is a curated membership community comprised of the world’s most innovative individuals and organizations in science, technology, and related fields. The WTN and its members – those creating the 21st century — are focused on exploring what is imminent, possible, and important in and around emerging technologies.
Yikes! When do you ever get a chance to see the likes of Joanie Lemercier, Kyle McDonald, and Joel Gethin Lewis in the same room demonstrating real-time video artwork? At the ScreenLab Residency that’s where! Through the ScreenLab 0×02 residency, artists Kyle McDonald, Joanie Lemercier and Joel Gethin Lewis worked together with students and researchers at MediaCityUK and an advanced technology center on the main campus (Dig this place: The Centre for Visual Environments). It features the Octave, a truly astounding setup which is detailed HERE. Together they developed interactive artworks that provided a unique experience for each visitor by creating artificial worlds using sound and visuals that react to their movement.
The results of the residency were unveiled at a launch event on Wednesday 5 December which formed part of the University’s As Yet Impossible series of lectures, bringing together future thinkers to challenge audiences and give them a glimpse of how science and the arts can combine to shape the world. The really cool thing is that most of the work is openly available on Github- Here’s Kyle’s, Here’s Elliot Woods’ (curator and open source contributor to vvvv). Just got a note from Wilderbe, a dance troupe that uses projectionmapping techniques to enhance their performance. Looks like they are running an IndieGoGo campaign to raise funds for a projector purchase. Let’s see….projection, dance, performing arts+technology….how could we resist? Useful information about the new Pandoras Box Version 5.3:
- Please notice that the new handling of stock assets will create a folder “c:\coolux\content\stock assets” on your system. The Stock Assets installer file itself can be found right underneath the Pandoras Box Rev7832 file in the appropriate section in the download sector.
- Breakout panes
Right click on panes/tabs for possibility to breakout separate panes out of the main frame
- Matrix Patcher brushes
Create patch in new matrix patcher and save, drag .pbx file as asset and drop it on any(!) output, real time update via “update patch” in matrix patcher.
Select an output as preview and choose “select matrix mask” for matrix preview
- Image sequences
Right click on project, choose “create image sequence” and then attach or right click on folder in asset tree and choose “import as image sequence”
- Image converter, Transparency in mpeg-videos
The Image Converter is able to render a mpeg video from an image sequence. In version 5.3 it includes the feature to generate a black-and-white mask in addition to the main video. You may choose to include the b/w information side-by-side like, resulting in one video. In Pandoras Box, the Masking effect “Alpha Left Right” (respectively “Alpha Top Bottom”) separates the two videos again and renders them while applying a keying effect to the main video.This workflow leads to transparency (alpha channel) in mpg-videos and saves far more performance than other codec solutions.
- Widget device
Choose from “device types” and set the key for commands which are sent to the Widget Designer
- Content as interface: layer picking
With the feature “Layer Picking” in version 5.3, content interaction has gone one step further. It is now possible to recalculate the mouse position within the preview or even the client´s fullscreen window and thus recognize what layer is touched and where exactly on the layer the mouse is located. A layer has become a true interface.
- Network card selection
Select a defined network card in “configuration” for communication of master and clients (restart the application after selection).
In the matrix patcher you can choose another network card to send Art-Net data
- “Layer routing to render passes”
Lets you route layers to only specific outputs and gives you the possibility to reorder the “Video Processing Pipeline”
“Black level compensation”
Enables you to adjust the black level within softedge projections. From now on, layers can explicitly be set to be included or excluded by the first Pandoras Box render pass and thus be placed outside from the warp / keystone / softedge structure. This setting is available in the layer’s Inspector.

There are new functions within the Pandoras Box SDK (PB Automation). Please refer to the help file chapter SDK that has been revised and now offers many examples and detailed description.

A technician sent me a link to this beautiful corporate gig for Orange done by ETC Audiovisuel. Utilizing ETC’s proprietary “Onlyview” software, they were able to do it with with a whopping 26 Christie 20k’s!

Projectionmapping artists Obscura recently installed a HUGE permanent projectionmapping rig for The Hive, a night club in Copenhagen. The decorations for the walls were modelled in SketchUp and transformed into flat shapes using the Pepakura Software. The different fragments were then laser cut in thick cardboard. Assembling the pieces wasn’t easy, but with patience and small nails, acrylic foam and other remedies they were put onto the wall and fastened.
They used six 4000 lumen Acer projectors for covering the two walls. They were mounted below the ceiling to cover 11 by 3 meters on each wall. The connections were made using HDMI cables. The longest stretch was approximately 15 meters – about the furthest you can go without amplification.
A Mac Pro with an ATI Radeon 5870 graphics card was connected to two TrippleHead2Go devices. On the machine, Madmapper handled the precise mapping of pre rendered graphics to the physical shapes. But apart from that we created a box with buttons that allows the employees to switch between the different prerecorded video loops. The box was created using an Arduino board that communicates with Max/MSP on the computer. Max/MSP handles the timing, fading and switching between modes and forwards a midi signal to MadMapper which then reacts by switching between between presets. Also it was a requirement that a VJ should be able to connect to the system. The VJ switches to a setting on the Arduino box and plugs in a DVI cable. This mode is handled by a Blackmagic capture card that forwards the VJ signal into Milumin. Here the VJ signal is adjusted to the dimensions of the walls (the signal is tiled and mirrored) and the output from Milumin is then via Syphon put into MadMapper.
So once again we see a prime example of how a little thought and ingenuity go a long way. Expensive components and complex gear need not be the purvey of video, mapping, or permanent installs, indeed- you can get some pretty astounding results with less. Nice work Obscura!

The 19th annual Thea Awards will be presented April 6, 2013, at a gala dinner at Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California. TEA is an international non-profit association representing the world’s leading creators, developers, designers and producers of compelling places and experiences.
Electrosonic played key roles in five very diverse Thea Award winners.
Working directly for Walt Disney Imagineering, Electrosonic performed the AV systems installation of the “Radiator Springs Racers” ride at Disney California Adventure Park. Winning in the Attraction category, the ride puts visitors in the driver’s seat for a thrilling race through the world of Disney-Pixar’s “Cars.”
Electrosonic’s close working relationship with Universal Studios has resulted in another award winning attraction. Electrosonic handled AV system design and integration for another winner in the Attraction category: “Transformers: The Ride 3D” at Universal Studios Singapore and Universal Studios Hollywood. The attraction is an immersive, next-generation thrill ride that puts participants in the middle of the ultimate war zone with the famed Transformers.
Winning in the Museum category is Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame in Calgary, for which Electrosonic provided AV system design and integration services. The dynamic new facility celebrates Canada’s sports heroes and legends in a dozen galleries with compelling media and displays.
Working for WET Design, Electrosonic performed the projection system design and integration for WET’s contribution to Living Screen display at the “Big-O Experience” water sculpture at Yeosu 2012 International Expo in Korea, a winner in the Event category. The unique multimedia installation fused a breakthrough concept and cutting-edge technology to dazzle visitors.
Finally, Electrosonic was hired by Thinkwell Group of Burbank, CA to provide design, engineering and installation services for the “Warner Bros. Studio Tour – The Making of Harry Potter” in London, which netted honors in the Studio Tour category. At this venue, visitors experience the “making of” process used to bring the extraordinary characters, worlds and events of the books alive on the big screen.

Madmapper 1.3 was released, but hold the phone- 1.4 Beta is here!
