Electrosonic Launches Apprenticeship Program with Skillsmatch
It might only be a few jobs to start, but Electrosonic is hoping to bolster the employment numbers for a sagging job market. They are launching a new apprenticeship program in conjunction with Skillsmatch to offer skilled job opportunities to young London residents.
London (December 7, 2011) – Electrosonic was recently awarded the AV systems integration contract at JP Morgan’s new Canary Wharf site in London. As a result of this appointment, on Thursday 10th November Electrosonic and Skillsmatch jointly held a recruitment and selection event to appoint young, local ‘Apprentice Installers’ to take part in a six month audio-visual apprenticeship program with Electrosonic, working in-part at JP Morgan. Following a six month placement it is Electrosonic’s intention to offer six individuals a full time ‘Junior AV Installer’ position.
Skillsmatch is the flagship job brokerage service for the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. Supported by Canary Wharf Group and working with a range of strategic partners, it offers innovative recruitment solutions to companies looking to source new staff and to job seekers wishing to secure sustainable employment. JP Morgan has made a commitment to work with Skillsmatch and East London Business to ensure local people and businesses benefit from their move to the borough.
Michael Cunningham, Placement Officer at Skillsmatch said “As a service committed to helping local residents access employment and training, we have been delighted to introduce six individuals to Electrosonic. We have been extremely impressed by the level of commitment, resource, and time that Electrosonic has invested to find the right people from us, and we look forward to continuing our successful relationship moving forward.”
Electrosonic was appointed by Canary Wharf Contractors at JP Morgan to provide the audio-visual design and installation over 37 floors of their offices at 25 Bank Street, London. The project consists of two phases, phase one, the ‘first fix’ stage, involves a variety of AV installation work across all floors, including cabling, speaker installation and a number of electric and glass screens. Phase two involves the audio-visual design and installation of the complete audio-visual systems in specialist areas on both the ground and first floor. The Apprentice Installers will spend time working at both Electrosonic’s EMEA headquarters in Kent and on-site at JP Morgan during the install phase of the project.
The program is geared around getting young unemployed people into work. Six Tower Hamlet’s residents’ will be given the opportunity to gain work experience, develop a trade and learn the basic skills needed to work within the audio-visual industry.
Martyn Barnett, Electrosonic’s Operational Resources Manager said “We were immediately attracted to this opportunity to source new aspiring talent from the local area. The level of candidates has been excellent and we have witnessed a real hunger to learn and willingness to engage and commit.”
The audio-visual industry is a growth industry, but there is a shortage of skilled workers. There are limited education establishments which offer AV installation courses, employers typically recruit individuals from IT or electrical backgrounds and provide the necessary AV training themselves. Electrosonic are very keen to work with Skillsmatch to help them source and train local recruits. “We recognise the recent growth in the AV industry and we are keen to make this investment to secure our ability to deliver high quality solutions into tomorrow’s markets.” commented Martyn Barnett.
Prior to the recruitment and selection day, which involved assessment centre activities to find twelve candidates with the right aptitude, dexterity and commitment for the programme, just under 100 applicants took part in a call centre screening process to whittle the number of applicants down to thirty. Following the assessment day, one-to-one interviews were held to find the final six candidates who will take part in the six month placement program commencing in January 2012.
Upon completion of the program it is Electrosonic’s intention to employ six Junior Installers to work on AV projects across Europe, the Middle-East and Africa.
