Form and Substance
Big reminder- Form and Substance: Projection Mapping in Contemporary Art, the first group exhibition in the United States dedicated exclusively to artists working with projection mapping as a medium- is this Friday. If you’re in the NYC area and you’re a fan, get to this exhibition!
In addition to the already outstanding line-up (including Davy and Kristin McGuire, John Ensor Parker, Joanie Lemercier), they’ve added two new artists to the roster: Joel Fitzpatrick is a fine artist, fashion designer, interior designer, lighting designer, and production designer. He will be presenting three works, including a collaboration with New York based painter and graffiti artist Adam Dare.
The exhibition opens Friday, May 10 at 6 PM at the Gowanus Ballroom at 55 9th Street in Gowanus, Brooklyn. The opening party is from 6 PM to 10 PM, and entry is free.
There will be a $10 cover charge starting at 10 PM, with Percussion Lab residents Nooka Jones and Archie Pelago playing till 4 AM. Proceeds from the door go to benefit the Gowanus Ballroom, which is still recovering from damage incurred during Hurricane Sandy.
The full list of artists is below. We are also still accepting tax-deductibe donations to help defray costs, including travel and accommodations for our foreign artists, promotional expenses, and production costs for several works. All donations are processed by Mister Artsee, a 501 (c) (3) arts-industry non-profit. Email for details about donating.
Mapping Festival 2013
Mapping Festival 2013 is about to get under way in Geneva so get tickets NOW. There’s something for everybody- installations, VJing, and workshops on mapping and stage design from the likes of Boris Edelstein, Joanie LeMercier, and Phillipe Chaurand.

As the sole broadcasting space of this magnitude in Switzerland, the festival is now also recognised internationally, and this with the richness of programming. NYX Atelier #01
The lighting design arm of NYX Visual, NYX Atelier recently did a private showing of “Tetraedre”, a projectionmapped sculpture for Vincent Coutelin’s private collection. The team painstakingly created the entire structure out of scrap materials and glue. They used a Panasonic 6k and a combo of Madmapper and Modul8 to drive the visuals. Nice work!

Integrated Visions to launch Form and Substance, a Group Exhibition
Exciting news from Brian and Michelle over at Integrated Visions- they’re opening a group exhibition entitled “Form and Substance” at the Gowanus Ballroom on the weekend of May 10-12. It’ll feature works by Joanie LeMercier, Claudio Sinatti, Domingo Zapata, and more. Here’s an excerpt fro the release note:
“Integrated Visions Productions is excited to announce an additional creative path for 2013. In the wake of the success of the ‘Codex Dynamic’ group exhibition at the 2012 DUMBO Arts Festival (see PF article), which received the festival’s Grand Prize and Best in Show awards, we’re focusing on more intimate artwork.
We’ve developed a series of projection mapped paintings, combining fine art painting techniques with cutting-edge, projection-mapped animations to create a hybrid medium that we see as the first new terrain being explored by working artists in the 21st Century – akin to Impressionism and similar upstart movements at the turn of the last century.
We quickly realized that there exists a global community of artists and technologists working at the intersection of the traditional media of painting and sculpture and projection mapping, and we began to contact our favorite practitioners and curate a group exhibition.
Form and Substance, North America’s first group exhibition dedicated to projection mapping as a fine arts medium, will take place the weekend of May 10-12, at the Gowanus Ballroom in Brooklyn, New York. The Frieze Art Fair, the enfant terrible of the global festival circuit, takes place in New York over the same weekend, making this a unique opportunity to make a global impression.”

White Kanga Strikes Again for CTL Logistics
The incredibly inventive folks over at White Kanga recently did this huge industrial for CTL Logistics. Utilizing eight 22k projectors and Touchdesigner, they transported the audience on an intergalactic themed presentation, and then fed live video of the entertainment into the animated video frames. These guys do some amazing work- make sure to check out their piece that appeared on PF previously… MPS v1.0

Resolume Content Creation Contest
The folks at Resolume are throwing a content creation party and they want you all to come! From their blog:
To participate, all you have to do is fire up Resolume and go crazy with the sources, effects and blend modes. Make combinations that you didn’t think were possible. Stack effects as high as wedding cake to make something totally new out of that Solid Color. Flip the order of the blend modes and see what comes out. Above all, have fun with it!
The only rule is simple: you can only use the built-in effects and sources of Resolume. No still images, videos or webcam footage.

Castle Nightclub Gets a Rig from DCBolt Productions
Devin Wambolt over at DCBolt Productions gave me the heads-up on this crazy nightclub install they just completed. The club is Castle Nightclub in Chicago and they premiered the system for a huge NYE bash this year. Devin reports: “We are using three different types of LED’s in this system, (aside from the house lights) LED panels, LED strips, and LED modules. Our LED strips are (32x) SMD5050 LED pixels per meter, our Modules are (5x) SMD5050 LEDs per pixel, the LED panels are 6 millimeter pitch SMD2835 LED pixels. The led strips and modules are run by MADRIX Ultimate for real-time dynamic playback. The LED panel screens are being driven by a custom configured Resolume Arena setup.
Some pretty impressive work, and I’ll be sure to check it out next time I’m in Chicago!
Teleknoika Projectionmapping Workshop
Roberto Fazio joined forces with Joanie LeMercier in a projectionmapping workshop sponsored by Teleknoika. Looks like it happened in November, but through the magic of Vimeo and Projectionfreak, you too can see the action. Microsoft IllumiRoom
Brett Jones, over at Projection Mapping Central sent me a really neat project he worked on as an intern at Redmond. Microsoft’s ‘IllumiRoom’ is a proof-of-concept system for augmenting the area around a display with projected visualizations. Gamers- take note! Yikes…what’s going to happen when I use this with 3D glasses????

SOTA Creative 360-deg. Mapping for Subaru Australia
SOTA Creative drives game changing experience for Subaru Australia.
Following product supply challenges that resulted from the tragic Japanese earthquake and tsunami, Subaru Australia needed a game changing communication experience to re-motivate their Dealer Network and Launch two new models. As long term experiential agency for Subaru Australia, the team at SOTA conceived and produced a one-off experience incorporating a “Virtual Drive”, where all 240 people in the audience became passengers in a unique 360 degree cinematic creation. On over 125 metres of continuous screen, a Full High Definition projection system took our audience on a drive through some of Australia’s iconic landscape and environments.
SOTA Creative conceived and produced two major 360 degree cinematic experiences, one each for the reveals of the Impreza and the XV, plus continually changing 360 degree visual effects for environment design and speaker support for the duration of the evening. The images were created and edited to be delivered at Full High Definition (22,000 pixels wide and 1080 pixels high). The virtual drive experience was shot using a purpose built 9 camera rig which was mounted on a custom-fitted Film vehicle. Post production was done both in Los Angeles and Sydney and converted by SOTA to be projected through 12 Christie Projectors (HD-10k) and a Dataton Watchout Control system. Haycom provided the Christies and the staging/rigging.

After a worldwide search, SOTA Creative sourced a Los Angeles based camera system and rig capable of delivering 22,000 pixel width 360 degree images, developed a post production process to deliver the finished programs to a Watchout controlled system and then to 12 matched Christie projectors. Social Animal used the incredible SA360 rig to deliver the goods. (Make sure to check out their site for some cool interactive loops and extra footage- and some pretty amazing case studies).The continuous audience surround screen surface was a challenge in itself, needing to be floor to ceiling, while allowing “openings” for audience arrival, F&B service and the revealing of Vehicles and Entertainment. The LA team from Social Animal came to Australia for literally a 3 day shoot. 
We also used a still shoot of the interior of the car to produce the interior of the car and then this was added as the foreground of the video. We then had the challenge of doing rescaling up to 22,00 pixel width and had to crop it to our Aspect Ratio requirements and cut it up to suit the 12 Christie projectors (12 movies playing together using the ‘Watch out System”. And before all of this could happen we had to produce the foreground plate with the ‘interior of the car’. We produced this as a 22,000 pixels wide by 1080 high all played in full high definition. The end result was projection 106 metres around all the audience. Notice, also that the ‘rear view mirror’ had the same image as the ‘rear window’.
The Ice Book- Super Intricate Projectionmapping Paper Models
When I was a kid, Saturdays were sometimes spent going to work with my Dad. He was an architect and since it was a weekend, we had the run of the place. I invariably would gravitate to the drafting room which, at his place, was huge! Lots of workstations, cabinets with every kind of colored pen/pencil/tip combo, electric erasers, all manner of paper, model making supplies, etc. Basically, everything that a small curious boy could get in trouble with! The thing that fascinated me the most though, were the scale models of all the buildings they were working on. Super intricate detail, all the way down to the little people cutouts and hand railings, as well as street signs and various decorative flora. So I was thrilled to come across the work of Davy and Kristin McGuire, an artistic duo out of the UK that does small-scale paper modeling combined with projection techniques. They form The Ice Book and direct, design, and perform their original video/model mashups for everything from installations to live theater shows, dance performances, interactive video performances and everything in between.
Their paper models are extremely detailed and exquisitely cut. Adding the element of projection just completely brings them to life. They use After Effects and Final Cut to render the final video, and (no surprise here) Madmapper to map the sets. So often on this site I focus on large-scale scale work, only to realize the really detailed stuff is every bit as intriguing!
A couple of their pieces stand out- ‘Psycho- Homage to Hitchcock’ as well as ‘The Hunter’.

The idea of an interactive pinboard at home is just so strikingly obvious….I think I’m going to start assembly immediately! Now to make it so there can be date-relevant info displayed along with fun remembrances and package it up in a mappable environment…hmmm……

Winter in Venice
Well….The Venetian. In Las Vegas. But it looks like Venice, right? The Projection Studio is at it again with a winter wonderland being projected onto the facade of the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas. Ross Ashton is no stranger to giant projection gigs, having accomplished some pretty amazing projects this past year. You can read more about them here or over at the Projection Studio’s website.
London, UK, based The Projection Studio – led by Ross Ashton – has delivered a spectacular and eye-catching new monumental video projection show to help celebrate the ‘Winter In Venice’ Festival at the world famous Venetian resort in Las Vegas.
Ashton has also created a series of works for a permanent video son et lumière extravaganza which was launched in summer and is being show nightly, year round. The colourful, vibrant giant images are projected on to a 25 x 25 metre canvass forming part of the Venetian’s frontage including a full scale replica of the famous Clock Tower from St Mark’s square in Venice. Ashton was initially asked by the Venetian to consult on the technical installation and produce all the projection artwork, after which he tendered and won the project having faced off some serious competition!
The newest ‘Winter In Venice’ video work is centered around Amadora, a character with roots deep in Italian folk lore, created by the Venetian as a key symbol for their 2012 Festival. In the projection show, she represents an anthropomorphisation of time – she is young at the start of the year and ages with the passing of time. Ashton developed this temporal idea and combined it with Vivaldi’s famous Four Seasons violin concertos as a starting point for his visual imagery, which follows the changing seasons of the year. It starts with the chilly ice of winter covering the building, which melts to reveal the flowers, positivity and energy of spring. For summer, viewers are transported to vivacious fields of blooming sunflowers, complete with a massive bee flying through, colliding with dandelions and pollinating them which then transitions into autumn. Grapes grow up the side of the building, mushrooms sprout and dance emphatically to the music and leaves swirl and jive around in a sea of movement, being buffeted by the seasonal breezes. These blast the action into winter, where the building ices up again … ready for the Festive season.
The five-minute piece is accompanied by a special re-worked version of The Four Seasons created by UK based sound artist, Karen Monid. She created one minute musical vignettes based on Vivaldi’s score, but very much in her own style.
A key reason that The Projection Studio was chosen to produce the series of visual shows is Aston’s reputation for pictorial storytelling with detailed historical references, which can really bring significance and relevance to any building or environment. The Venetian’s team wanted each show to have real depth and substance as well as being instantly accessible for the public. The resulting ‘live art’ phenomenon has been hugely successful at the Venetian with the initial three daily shows, and this has now continued with the special ‘Winter In Venice’ work. Says Ashton, “The challenge was to produce a unique and interesting narrative to engage onlookers in each case, which also required a distinctive Venetian feel, and had to be delivered to exceptionally high standards”. He has really enjoyed the experience, in the process adding The Venetian to a growing list of global landmarks to receive the Ashton projection art touch!
Ashton created all the storyboarding and worked alongside two other graphic designers – Nils Porrmann and Sang Gun Kim – on the imaging.
Mark Coniglio Wins World Technology Award 2012
Congratulations to Mark Coniglio, creator of Isadora, for a WTA win! It’s hard to say how Izzy has affected me in my work- it’s the first app I used for video manipulation, and the one that kept me hooked- but it’s so much more than that. The Isadora user community is pretty unique. If you haven’t had a chance, check out Troikatronix and give it a whirl. Chances are it’ll change the way you work.
NEW YORK, October 23, 2012: The World Technology Network, in association with CNN, TIME, Technology Review, and Science, awarded composer and media artist Mark Coniglio the 2012 World Technology Award in the category of the Arts at a ceremony at the Time & Life Building in New York City.
The award recognizes “innovative work of the greatest likely long-term significance.” Coniglio’s award in the arts category recognized his contribution as a composer, media artist and co-founder of the performance group Troika Ranch; as the creator of the interactive media-software Isadora; and for his contribution as a teacher who has shared his aesthetic vision and technical know-how through innumerable workshops across the globe.
Of his award, Coniglio said “I’m thrilled to receive this wonderful honor. I’ve spent my life exploring the intersection of art and media, trying to find ways to use computer technology to more deeply express the human experience. To have that journey acknowledged by the WTN is truly gratifying.” The new WTN Fellows and Corporate Members were officially inducted into the WTN membership during a gala ceremony at the Time & Life Building in New York City, where the winners were announced. The Awards gala occurred at the close of the World Technology Summit, a two-day “thought leadership” conference held in association with the WTN’s partner organizations.
The World Technology Awards have been presented by the WTN since 2000, as a way to honor those in 20 different categories of science and technology and related fields. The annual World Technology Awards nomination process is an intensive global one, lasting many months. The Award nominee pool this year of over 600 nominees came from three sources: names put forward by the WTN Fellows (winners and finalists from previous annual Award cycles in the individual Award categories); research by the WTN staff; and, to a lesser extent, from nominations from individuals and companies themselves.
The WTN is a curated membership community comprised of the world’s most innovative individuals and organizations in science, technology, and related fields. The WTN and its members – those creating the 21st century — are focused on exploring what is imminent, possible, and important in and around emerging technologies.
ScreenLab 0×02 Residency at MediaCityUK
Yikes! When do you ever get a chance to see the likes of Joanie Lemercier, Kyle McDonald, and Joel Gethin Lewis in the same room demonstrating real-time video artwork? At the ScreenLab Residency that’s where! Through the ScreenLab 0×02 residency, artists Kyle McDonald, Joanie Lemercier and Joel Gethin Lewis worked together with students and researchers at MediaCityUK and an advanced technology center on the main campus (Dig this place: The Centre for Visual Environments). It features the Octave, a truly astounding setup which is detailed HERE. Together they developed interactive artworks that provided a unique experience for each visitor by creating artificial worlds using sound and visuals that react to their movement.
The results of the residency were unveiled at a launch event on Wednesday 5 December which formed part of the University’s As Yet Impossible series of lectures, bringing together future thinkers to challenge audiences and give them a glimpse of how science and the arts can combine to shape the world. The really cool thing is that most of the work is openly available on Github- Here’s Kyle’s, Here’s Elliot Woods’ (curator and open source contributor to vvvv). Deadmau5 in London for Nokia
It’s hard not to like a Deadmau5 event….even harder when it involves production, video projection, and LED on a large scale. Last year, Deadmau5 did a gig on the side of the Millbank Tower to launch the Lumia 800, and it looks like they outdid that by a longshot with this event. Lotsa projection. Lotsa LED.

Nokia + Deadmau5 have smashed it once again to produce an ‘out of this world’ light and music spectacular. The pair promised to take fans to a whole new level to celebrate the launch of the new Nokia Lumia handsets- and they didn’t disappoint. The entire London square was on Wednesday night plunged into darkness as Deadmau5 produced an epic audio-visual extravaganza with technical wizardry. Thousands flocked to the capital to be a part of the must-see event of the year. ‘This is Lumia’ was nothing short of ground-breaking, blowing last year’s music experience out of the water. Every inch of the Flat Iron Square, from the windows and bins, came alive in a stunning set of bright lights, pulsing to the backbeat of Deadmau5. As the music started, the advanced technology played like a musical instrument, transforming the street into a kaleidoscope of colours whilst the superstar DJ performed on top of a roof in his trademark costume mouse head.

Meanwhile, @deadmau5 said: “Playing Millbank Tower was an incredible experience, so it’s great to be back in London to team up with Nokia again. The new show was a totally different concept from last year, but equally inspiring and technically challenging.”
Conor Pierce, VP for Nokia said: “We see the Lumia 920 as one of the most exciting phones we have launched at Nokia, it includes some truly ground-breaking innovations: Wireless charging, a screen that automatically adjusts its colour and brightness, depending on sunlight, a touchscreen that even works when you’re wearing gloves and best of all it’s a beautiful device; like the ‘This is Lumia’ event the 920 looks just awesome.”
Massive Video Wall Scoreboard for Pacers
Right here in my hometown! In fact, I got a peek at it before opening night and it looked cartoonishly huge even without being powered up. I might get a chance to get to rig an event around the behemoth this weekend so I’ll snap some more photos….but for a write up, check out Commercial Integrator’s web article.
The new scoreboard features twin 1080p HD video screens (Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Vision™ 6mm LED), each measuring 50 feet long – extending nearly foul line to foul line – by 21 feet high, about 2,800 square feet in total space. In addition to the HD screens running the length of the court, the rectangular scoreboard is capped by a pair of 25 feet by 14 feet full 1080p HD video screens facing each baseline. Completing the interior portion of the Bankers Life Fieldhouse upgrade is a pair of LED video displays, one in each balcony end zone. The displays measure 23’ by 10’ and provide fans with stats, replays, and other game-related information.
Through ANC Sports’ VisionSOFT operating system, the new audio and video upgrades work with the arena’s existing LED ribbon and digital courtside signage systems.
ANC also updated the aging audio system, head end and broadcast control room. The new control room was built out complete with a full 3G broadcast infrastructure with 1080P signals and production equipment to provide unprecedented image quality. ANC’s unique 64-bit operating system maximizes the clarity of the scoreboard as the operating system does not scale its content, enabling the video screens to display 1:1 resolution.

The WATCHOUT Academy is a one-day seminar designed to take you through the key features in award-winning WATCHOUT multi-display production and playback software.
The event kicks off with basic skills before moving on to a more advanced level, and the latest features in WATCHOUT. The Academy is run by members of the WATCHOUT team from Dataton HQ in Sweden and AVtrade, the WATCHOUT Premium Partner in the Netherlands, all with many years of WATCHOUT experience. There will be a Q&A session at the end of the day.

NYX Visuals Tofidi #1
Madmapper, Modul8, Ableton Live, and a weird snakey-looking sculpture make for a fascinating mapping from French artists NYX Visual Label. I love that most of their projects include some kind of really interesting sculpture….especially this one carved out of what appears to be some kind of foam. Check out another post on NYX HERE.

Angelsign Studio for Bridgestone Tiremapping
Well OK. We’ve had helicopters, trucks, all manner of cars, even lawn ornaments- now tires! Check out this projectionmapping of a Bridgestone tire done by Angelsign Studios of Milan. Angelsign had a hand in the Hugo Boss/McLaren projectionmapping for Roberto Fazio last year.
Urbanscreen Invades America- Rice University Centennial Celebration
Giant projection specialists Urbanscreen came to Rice University to produce the 100th Anniversary spectacle that would be splashed across 3 buildings on campus. From Mike Williams Media Relations , Rice University:
Thorsten Bauer went straight for the heart, rather than the intellect, of Rice University. So when he saw the Spectacle writ large for the first time, even the German artist shed a tear.
“We wanted to make it an experience for the audience,” he said. “It’s not as much about teaching them as it is about touching them.” Video after the jump….
As creative director and co-founder of URBANSCREEN, Bauer led the artists and technicians from Bremen, Germany, who designed the light and sound show that brought Lovett, Sewall and Herzstein Halls, the cornerstones of the university’s Academic Quadrangle, to stunning life for a series of performances during Rice’s Centennial Celebration.
Thousands experienced the awe-inspiring performance over three perfect autumn evenings inside the quad – and outside. One viewer tweeted about seeing a few seconds of the Spectacle from the air: “Even from 15,000 ft. we can tell we missed something special.”

Dataton Watchout 5.3 Released
Dataton released Watchout 5.3 on Monday- it’s available for free download from the Dataton website. Key new features include compatibility with Windows 8, control of WATCHOUT display software with the WATCHOUT Remote App under iOS6, plus Turkish and Japanese language versions to accompany existing Spanish and Chinese localizations.

Analog Way Eikos EKS500 Matrix Switcher
I have to keep reminding myself that computers really only do one thing at a time and even then, it’s only what you tell it to. It’s like I always tell my technophobe friends, “think of it like a toaster, you can make toast- not lasagna”. Video gear is much the same way, in fact, that’s what I think distinguishes great products from mediocre ones. If it does one thing well- great. Presentation switchers in a perfect world would be the same way. But the live event world is rarely perfect and presentation switchers try really hard to bridge the gap. Does this mean doing many things is not a good thing? No. For more complex presentations, units that can accomplish many things are perfect for rental/staging companies. These units are designed to do a lot, and like most everything, you get what you pay for. There are units that will simply and passively switch two sources -and there are units that try to be full-blown 2 M/E engines of wonder. Somewhere in there is the right piece for your application.
