The xx Gets XL-ent Gear

XL Video is supplying a high power projection system and Green Hippo Hippotizer i7 HD media servers for uber cool Mercury prize winning UK indie band The xx, who are currently in the middle of an 18 month world tour having just released their second album, Coexist. The highly innovative projection-based visual design was originated by Tobias G Randler, and then modified on the road by lighting director and lighting/video operator Michael Straun. The design has evolved and grown, and currently five projectors are being utilised in total. Two Barco FLM22 22K projectors are positioned at FOH, and separately either projected across a white backdrop or carefully masked and beamed onto the band members, or as the set reaches its climactic conclusion, onto an imposing 12 x 12 ft three dimensional transparent X which is revealed for the final three numbers. The Perspex X is also filled with smoke at certain times to produce an opaque surface adding another dimension for the projection.


The other three FLM 22s are fitted with short throw lenses and positioned onstage directly behind each band member and project straight out into the house.
More recently, the design has undergone a further evolution by incoming show director Willo Perron of WP & A, which has seen the addition of 48 Stealth LED panels mounted directly onto the back of the X, fed by another Hippotizer also supplied by XL. The Hippo server system is run in the UK and Europe by John Montague, and Projection is looked after by Bjorn Parry. The four Hippotizers – three active and a hot backup – are triggered via Michael Straun’s Avolites Tiger Touch console – and are also re-programmed ‘live’ during the show, allowing Straun to feel the emotion and mood of the performance and audience and react accordingly.
The Hippotizer i7s were a new investment by XL for the tour – supplied by A.C. Entertainment Technologies – and were selected mainly for their Live Mask function, which allows very quick, accurate Alpha Masks to be drawn onto the output of both the Layers and the Mask Outputs. Much of the show is about video being used as a highly dynamic lightsource for creating moods and atmosphere, silhouetting the band, or capturing them starkly in the projector beam paths with undulating multicolour gobo-like effects and beautifully fluid, subtle laseresque moments.

There are occasional snippets of more traditional projection techniques with liquid and oil type effects bursting out and filling the backdrop. Once revealed, the X comes alive with meticulously masked projections from the front projectors and ‘internal’ effects radiating out from the Stealth LED behind, all resulting in a very unique energy and intimacy, connecting with the audience and drawing them into the action. XL’s Project Manager Paul Wood says, “It is a pleasure working with artists and a creative team who are prepared to take some creative risks and producing something that’s very stimulating and eXciting”.

projectiondesign at the London Transport Museum

Who doesn’t love trains and transport museums? I thought so. No one.

We go to a lot of ‘kid-centric’ venues for entertainment (obviously- with our kids). But like any concert or theatre show I attend, I’m drawn in to the details of production. Museums and the like are pretty much the incubators for ‘multi-media’ as it were so there are no shortages of projectors and display devices- right down to the signage. So I got a thrill when I read about the London Transport Museum’s use of projection…. and their weapon of choice? Norway’s projectiondesign of course. They are celebrating 5 years of constant use. 5 years! Projectiondesign’s projectors are renowned for their utility when it comes to permanent and semi-permanent installs, as thoroughly featured by the following:

Situated in Covent Garden Market, London’s most frequented tourist hot spot, the London Transport Museum utilises projectiondesign F3+ and F1+ series projectors throughout the museum’s exhibit areas to tell the story of transport within London. The projection system was installed and maintained by global systems integrator, Electrosonic in 2007 and has been working non-stop ever since. “In 1933, Chief Executive, Frank Pick’s mantra was ‘fitness for purpose’ and he believed that good design was essential. This principle applies to the design of technology in our gallery,” explains Rob Lansdown, Chief Projects and Infrastructure Officer at London Transport Museum. “We use projection to show how this unique design culture was developed across the company’s entire range, from vehicles and architecture to information signs and publicity. Our requirements in 2007 were for high-resolution projectors that would be stable over time as well as produce outstanding image quality in various ambient light levels and, which required minimum maintenance over the lifetime of the exhibit. We are very pleased with how well the projectors have performed.”

F1+ projectors are installed in a specially designed ceiling mount to project a massive 12-meter floor canvas. The exhibit takes advantage of projectiondesign’s high brightness, accurate colour capabilities and 24/7 failsafe operation. Visitors can see the collection of 5,000 posters and art collection for themselves as they walk through the exhibit. projectiondesign F3+ and F1+ series projectors are used to communicate the story of London in major exhibits such as Victorian transport, World’s first underground, Pioneer tube, Travel revolution, Growth of suburbia, London in the 1920s and 1930s, London transport at war, London Icons and Transport futures.

“Our museum has no moving parts, so through projection, we are able to visualise the scale, size and complexity of London’s transport,” adds Lansdown.

“The building is an English Heritage grade II listed former Victorian flower market, which relies on natural cooling and heating. As with all technology, heat is an issue for us, and Electronsonic designed specially mounted projection systems.”

Limelight Projection Maps for the Skyway International Light Festival 2012 in Torun, Poland

Limelight is a collective that creates monumental projection works. They’ve been fortunate enough to be able to present their work all over the world, and this most recent work is a great example of their inspiration.

ISAM 2.0 Wooden Toy

Well I finally had a chance to see Amon Tobin’s iconic ISAM 2.0 show in Chicago at the Congress Theatre last weekend. I had to restrain myself from just jumping in at FOH and bugging anybody about the setup, but there were two pairs of what looked like Barco FLM-HD20′s and Peter Sistrom’s control bridge. Behind all that was the excited crew from Leviathan. The visuals from V Squared Labs and Leviathan didn’t disappoint and the Congress’ killer Nexo line array thumped with authority. I wanted to hang around after the show to chat up the crew, but since I get to Chi-town once in a blue moon, I left to go hang with some close friends. Plus, Amon didn’t take the stage until fairly late- and I’m old. Kidding.

It’s hard to explain what I saw exactly. There’s a lot going on and one only needs to see some footage to really understand….which, by the way, you can do here:

All in all, it was a fun time. I rarely get to actually attend a concert unless I’m working it, so it was a treat to see. Hats off to the whole crew that put their efforts into this one-of-a-kind event.

BARTKRESA Designs Event for FOX Mundo

The big Christies patiently awaiting the call...

BARTKRESA designs for some of the premier events these days- including Christie’s much-talked-about booth at InfoCOMM 2012. Bart’s a huge Christie fan and you can see some of his featured work with Christie HERE. This one was for FOX Mundo’s event at Club Nokia.

The Dataton video servers had installed Intensity Pro HDMI capture cards that were used to capture 1080p HDMI signal coming from a laptop with Modul8.

projectiondesign F22 in World’s Largest Ship Sim

A while back I featured a story on the Swire Marine Training Center, which uses 24 projectiondesign F82′s, their flagship big-gun projector. This one though, uses a whopping 48 smaller projectors (projectiondesign’s F22) to simulate two 360 degree bridges. Farstad Shipping built the sims to train people on the massive rigs being deployed to support Australia’s natural gas boom. From projectionDesign’s website:

Farstad Shipping, the owner and operator of Offshore Simulator Center AS (OSC) of Ålesund, Norway, is a leading supplier of support and services to the international oil industry. The Perth project is the OSC’s most ambitious installation to date and was opened in December by the Norwegian Prime Minister, Jens Stoltenberg.

The offshore training simulator is the world’s largest of its kind, located in Perth, Australia. It is built to simulate two large, 360 degree bridges, using 48 of projectiondesign’s F22 wuxga DLP® projectors. The aim is to have the bridge personnel train to operate large-scale mechanical hardware, such as winches, by working together with other bridge personnel and rig cranes in a team effort, in an environment as close to a real life as possible.

The images were seamlessly blended together to produce a full 360-degree image that was some 7 meters high and 15 meters in diameter. The “half a teacup” shaped screen incorporates similar technology to that used in IMAX cinemas, and Joel A. Mills, the OSC design director, explains: “The visual simulation aspect of the system is fully integrated with the hardware on the ‘bridge’, which is all Rolls-Royce marine equipment and which behaves exactly as it would if you were really at sea. As soon as the simulation starts, you are convinced not only that you are surrounded by water but that the water is actually moving and that you are moving with it.” Mills continues; “a lot can happen when you are servicing an oil-rig in a remote, offshore location, especially if the weather is bad. So the simulator gives us the opportunity to re-create those adverse weather conditions. As the waves grow larger, the movement of the vessels within the 3D environment is mathematically and physically resolved so that their response is exactly as you would expect to find in the real world.”

The projectiondesign projectors were chosen due to OSC’s need for total consistency in terms of brightness, optics and colour matching, reflecting the mission-critical nature of their work. Joel A. Mills explains: “Rather than using a few large, powerful projectors, our requirement is for a large number of relatively small devices that can nonetheless deliver very high-performance imaging over a short throw distance. The F22 is perfect in this respect – bright, consistent, rugged and reliable.”

Northland Church Battle of the Bands 2012

I’ve been really looking into the whole cost/quality axiom that plagues projection and set design. I work at a theatre so I see this problem daily- it’s a business that is constantly running up against more for less. I just ran an article on Tom Beg, a graduate student who overcame this conundrum with a few good ideas and some relatively inexpensive gear. I also featured the Indianapolis Opera a while back using nothing but white canvas panels and readily available VJ/DJ software (Modul8, Madmapper, PF faves). With the following, it looks like Steven Hall and crew at the Northland Church have achieved a pretty decent end result with an eye towards cost as well.

Every year Northland church hosts the Battle of the Bands, and this year they wanted to step up the look of the stage by using projectionmapping. You’d think “pricey” right off the bat, but with a little elbow grease and some good ideas they pulled off a great looking stage.


For a BOB format, you need flexibility to keep things fresh. For projection they used two DL2′s FOH and utilized the on-board AXON media servers to fire content. These units, while not exceptionally bright, are readily available and relatively inexpensive to rent (and buy for that matter). The units were controlled from a lighting console via DMX, and they used the collage blend mode in a 2×1 to cover the stage. The screens are where the big creativity came in- using simple 2×4 construction covered in white muslin, they were able to suspend these from their upstage truss. Then, using simple masks (created in Paint.net) they were able to separate each shape onto a different layer, letting them create all kinds of looks. Projectionmapping Inside the LV21 Lightship

Tom Beg is an MA student at UCA, Rochester and sent me some photos and info about his last project. The LV 21 is a decommissioned lightship currently moored at Gillingham Pier, County Kent, UK. He worked in conjunction with an event called the International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend to produce content featuring Morse code as visualized by dots and dashes. I’ve seen lot’s of projectionmapping done on ships, but very little IN a ship, let alone the content being ABOUT the ship. He used four Optoma HD600X-LV projectors for the overall shoot. Photoshop and After Effects were used for the animations and for the mapping. These were played back through Cyclone HD Media players (very cool little units, BTW). All this adds up to a fairly ‘lo-fi’ solution but as Tom states “I think this project proves that creating interesting work through projectionmapping isn’t out of reach for the everyday man. You don’t need expensive equipment and specialist software if you have good ideas and the right location”. True dat.

More Olympic Sized Projectionmapping

This time from the good folks at Klip Collective featuring Dr. Mojo of MojoVideoTech and Ryan Uzilevsky of Light Harvest. They got to hang in Boston and projection map, shoot, and generally wreck havoc on Beantown for the run up to the Olympic Opening Ceremonies. Looks like they got to use the killer water-jet technique made popular recently in a vid from KC and the Good Doctor for Nike’s Melo M8. Check out the custom projector mounts….especially the tripod-mounted 10k! I love the work these guys do and you can’t help but admire the craftsmanship.

“To celebrate the 2012 Olympic Games, Procter & Gamble and Gillette staged a series of projected video displays on buildings throughout Boston. The series concluded with an event at Boston’s Institute of Contemporary Art which coincided with the Opening Ceremonies in London.


The ambitious video concepts and technical production were spearheaded by Philadelphia-based Klip Collective. The projector package at the museum event included two Christie HD+35Ks, six double stacked converged Barco FLM HD20Ks and featured two massive water vapor screens provided by Mirage Water Works, as well as projections on the museum’s facade. A Christie M-Series HD10K plus an additional Barco HD20K were used for the mobile locations. The challenge of video mapping with poor weather conditions and a tight production schedule was met by the highly skilled projection team which included KLIP’s Ric & Steve Rivera, Ryan Uzilevsky of Light Harvest Studios and MVT’s Doctor Mojo.”

Christie Digital Hosts High Frame Rate Expert Panel at SIGGRAPH 2012

CYPRESS, Calif. – (July 19, 2012) – As the Platinum Sponsor of SIGGRAPH 2012, Christie, the first in the world to publically demonstrate 3D High Frame Rate (HFR) projection technology using a single projector, is proud to host the SIGGRAPH HFR Panel, “High Frame Rate Cinema, Impacts on Art and Technology,” to be held Wednesday, August, 8 at 10:45 a.m., at the Los Angeles Convention Center, Hall K. The panel will feature 10 cinema industry leaders, led by Gordon E. Sawyer Academy Award winner Douglas Trumbull and Dennis Muren, Senior Visual Effects Supervisor at Industrial Light & Magic. It will be moderated by Paul Salvini, chief technology officer (CTO) of Christie. SIGGRAPH 2012 will be staged August 5 – 9.

Filmmaker and Visual Effects legend Douglas Trumbull’s photographic effects credits include groundbreaking films such as “2001: A Space Odyssey,” “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” “Blade Runner,” and “The Tree of Life.” Douglas Trumbull pioneered work on High Frame Rate cinematography and projection with his Showscan process of 70mm film photographed and projected at 60 fps, and is now exploring 3D at 120 fps. Dennis Muren is the recipient of eight Academy Awards for Best Achievement in Visual Effects, with credits that include “Star Wars” and “Terminator 2: Judgment Day.”

· Luke Moore, Director of Special Projects at Canada’s Side Effects Software, in Toronto, is responsible for identifying and addressing the unique technical challenges faced by studios using the popular Houdini VFX and Animation software. Luke brings first-hand knowledge and anecdotes regarding challenges of managing large datasets necessary to enable higher temporal and physical resolution to meet the needs of new challenges in modern production environments.

· Phil Oatley is Head of Technology at New Zealand-based Park Road Post Production, where his visionary talents have guided the company through incredible growth, including establishing key partnerships to promote HFR research and development.

· Dr. Lincoln Wallen, Head of Research and Development at Dreamworks Animation, in California, and formerly CTO at Electronic Arts Mobile, where he was instrumental in shaping EA’s approach to the mobile business, creating a strong portfolio of mass market mobile games, as well as games delivering a next-generation consumer experience.

Telemundo in The Rabbit Hole

Jake Jorgovan and the Rabbit Hole Creative crew have outdone themselves with a well done projection-mapped set for Telemundo’s Upfront 2012 at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre in New York. They had a handful with their last big outing, the touring set for Mute Math, but it looks like this one was every bit as challenging and delivered a great result. Using 10 of the Barco HD20′s (supplied by CT Video), they were able to map the set and deliver content using 4 Pandora’s boxes (supplied by DWP Live). The set from Onset Design was painted with Screen Goo, a technique Rabbit Hole Creative has used with success in the past. Dig it!

MotionHouse Voyage

UK dance innovators MotionHouse opened their most ambitious project yet, The Voyage, two weeks ago. In celebration of the London 2012 Festival, Birmingham’s Victoria Square hosted the World Premiere of The Voyage which embarked on its maiden journey in front of a delighted audience. An estimated audience of 4,500 people were treated to the first performances of The Voyage, an epic tale that tells the dramatic story of passengers aboard the HMS Olympia, a 50ft passenger liner.

Crowds were swept away with delight as they watched incredibly physical dance and daring aerial acrobatics performed aboard the ship. This unique storytelling experience kept spectators hooked as they became part of an interactive dance and film spectacle with a talented cast of over 150.

Birmingham’s prestigious Town Hall provided the perfect backdrop to the free performance, which was complemented by stunning projections, and brilliant musical performances from the Town Hall Gospel Choir, live music from the Birmingham Conservatoire and amateur performers from Birmingham Ormiston Academy, Stratford Upon Avon College, Playbox Theatre, Solihull, Nova and Coventry Youth Dance Groups and the Motionhouse Adult dance group.

Produced by Birmingham Hippodrome, The Voyage is a fantastic cultural collaboration between one of the UK’s leading outdoor dance companies Motionhouse based in Leamington Spa and Australia’s acclaimed physical theatre and aerial company Legs On The Wall, from Sydney. The music was specially written and composed by Sophy Smith and Tim Dickinson. The set is a life-size cruise liner designed by Simon Dormon with stunning film projection from Logela Multimedia from the Basque region of Spain.

Dolby Theatre’s Brave New Technology

The Dolby Theatre, home to Cirque’s IRIS and the Oscars, is getting a couple of major technology upgrades. First is a configuration of two Christie Digital projectors stacked vertically using the new Christie Duo, an integration kit specially designed to optimize 3D and other special effects on the largest screens, and second is the new Dolby Atmos sound rig. On the heels of Infocomm comes the announcement from Sony that they’ll release a new SRX-R515 4K:

Sony today announced it aims to make digital cinema available to all with the unveiling of its new SRX-R515 ultra high quality 4K digital cinema projection system, designed in particular for use in small or medium sized screen auditoria.

Key features beyond its superior 4K resolution, include an outstanding contrast ratio of over 5000:1 and the use of multiple High Pressure Mercury Lamps – a cinema industry first. All in all, the SRX-515 represents the next stage in the evolution of digital cinema, enabling smaller exhibitors to embrace the tangible benefits of digitisation and deliver a superior viewing experience for their visitors.

d3 at the Diamond Jubilee

We see a lot of palaces getting projected onto these days, but when you get to project onto THE palace- Buckingham, that is, it’s a big deal. d3 Technologies was out in full force with Sam Pattinson (yes- of U2 and Elton John fame…) for the Diamond Jubilee last week and did a massive mapping onto the facade of Buckingham Palace as the highlight of the festivities. The event featured such celebrity acts as Kylie, Robbie Williams, Stevie Wonder, Sir Elton John, Madness and Sir Paul McCartney. Urbanscreen Projects for Vivid Live! Sydney

If you project onto the facades of buildings for a living, getting to do it on the Sydney Opera House must be the pinnacle of a career. Urbanscreen recently got the chance projecting the outside of the iconic building for Vivid Live!. In the past, the festival has drawn such luminaries as Laurie Anderson, Brian Eno, and Lou Reed as guest curators and is seen by over 400,000 people.

Bordos.Artworks Amazing 3D Projectionmapping at Mapping Festival 2012

The moniker “3D” is nothing new to projectionmapping, and in fact, the term has been over applied and misused so much that it’s sometimes hard to find ‘real’ 3D stuff. Not the case with Bordos.Artwork. Their recent display at Mapping Festival Geneva 2012 is jaw-dropping. 3D for real in all it’s 3D-ness. You can hear the crowd reaction at a couple of really killer moments in the video. Granted, it’s hard to tell the depth in the video, but the sheer scale must’ve been awesome! Bordos did a great job with this one, but it wasn’t without it’s challenges. 3D, while stunning, poses a lot of issues with brightness as well as viewing angle even under the best circumstances, let alone on the side of a building with a very short throw! Barco’s Groundbreaking 4k Laser Projection at CinemaCON

I’m kicking myself for not making out to Vegas this past month for the Holy Grail of Projection- CinemaCON. While it has come and gone, all the big players in the industry flexed their collective projection super-powers and impressed the industry once again. HFR and laser seems to be where we’re headed and it figured big at Cinemacon. So of course- Barco threw their skin in the game:

Indianapolis Opera Projectionmapping Faust

For the first time in the Indianapolis Opera’s history, projectionmapping is playing center stage. The past few seasons have seen projection playing a larger role in the repertoire, but this is the first time mapping has had a role. Gounod’s Faust, directed and designed by Joachim Schamberger, tells the tale of an aging scholar who trades his time in hell for earthly pleasures he’s missed out on. Schamberger, who’s previous projection designs were Tosca and Das Rheingold, has stepped up the projection role to a much higher level. I can’t tell you much about the actual opera itself, but I can tell you about the technical end:


For Faust, Joachim had 7 panels built (McGuire Scenic), various widths at 24′ high, that move on traveller tracks thus dividing the space into multiple planes. The panels are skinned in bright white and make absolutely pristine projection surfaces. In order to get the right perspective for sizing, he first used a camera view from the projection booth in Vectorworks to create the various scenes with line drawings. This gave a pretty good approximation of the angles, height, and space to be projected on. He then set about compiling the projection playback materiel using Photoshop and Final Cut. The resulting footage was then rendered in Final Cut at HDV 1920×1080 MPEG2. This presented a slight codec/bandwidth problem because the plan was to use VDMX and Syphon through Madmapper in order to size the scenes accurately. HDV and Mpeg2 are not the most friendly codec for playback through any software based system and the Radeon 2600HD cards in the trusty OctoMacPro were a bit under the task. Instead, I re-rendered the content, pared down the length of most of the clips, and packaged them all in PJPEG Quicktime movies. We ultimately decided on using Modul8 because of it’s extreme ease of clip organization, playback capabilities, and tight integration with Madmapper. All the content is played back via a FW800 1TB RAID 0. Viola- nary a burp in speed or smoothness. Because of the overall linearity of the set pieces, Madmapper proved to be invaluable. Joachim came up with a few templates of primitives that could be applied to many scenes and using presets, we were able to match the pieces exactly as seen in perspective. I used a Macbook Pro 17″ (quad i7, 16gb RAM), fed into an ImagePro, which fed a DVI DA and finally two DPI Lightning 35hd’s. The resultant image quality and brightness was astounding from 135′. Lensing provided by the good folks at Nationwide (thanks James!).
