Sensory Technology HD Touchscreen Overload

IMAG0840

Touch technology is so prevalent now that it’s hard NOT to use some incarnation of it on a day-to-day basis. From the oft-referred-to scenes from Minority Report to a weekly peek on NCIS, huge touchscreens are becoming the norm from corporate boardrooms to police HQ. I ran a piece a while back on the huge interactive video wall at the University of Dayton, but that was a projection-based system. Now it seems we’re seeing LCD screens of the same size, no longer restricted to NOC’s and control centers.

I recently got a sneak-peek at such a behemoth being custom built by Sensory Technologies. My beloved DPI Lightning HD35 was coming back from hospital and ready for pick up at the ST dock- and this awe-inspiring wall, in the build room, was in it’s final touches before being deployed. Field Engineer Chris Poore was kind enough to show me the particulars….

d3 at the Diamond Jubilee

d3dj1

We see a lot of palaces getting projected onto these days, but when you get to project onto THE palace- Buckingham, that is, it’s a big deal. d3 Technologies was out in full force with Sam Pattinson (yes- of U2 and Elton John fame…) for the Diamond Jubilee last week and did a massive mapping onto the facade of Buckingham Palace as the highlight of the festivities. The event featured such celebrity acts as Kylie, Robbie Williams, Stevie Wonder, Sir Elton John, Madness and Sir Paul McCartney. A full detail of the event and breakdown of the gear is available at their website, but here’s an excerpt: (more…)

infocomm-show-2012

I picked a heck of a week to go on vacation. infoComm2012 is in full swing at the Las Vegas Convention Center and although I had all kinds of chances to go and meet up with some great folks, they had to play second to my family! BUT- all of my extended family are showing off some great stuff at the show. What are the issues? Which one to buy of course….and there’s the fact that if you attend the show, how does one keep one’s head from exploding whilst on the show floor? Let’s see…..Las Vegas (check), high end electronics (check), massive, mind-blowing projection offerings (check), ummmmm. Can’t really come up with any negatives. Read on: (more…)

Urbanscreen Projects for Vivid Live! Sydney

If you project onto the facades of buildings for a living, getting to do it on the Sydney Opera House must be the pinnacle of a career. Urbanscreen recently got the chance projecting the outside of the iconic building for Vivid Live!. In the past, the festival has drawn such luminaries as Laurie Anderson, Brian Eno, and Lou Reed as guest curators and is seen by over 400,000 people.

From the Sunday Morning Herald Sydney:
“Speaking from Urbanscreen’s headquarters in Bremen, west of Hamburg, members Till Botterweck and Daniel Rossa describe their work as akin to architectural ”remixing”, like a DJ with a song, that gets people thinking differently about buildings around them. (more…)

Barco’s Groundbreaking 4k Laser Projection at CinemaCON

I’m kicking myself for not making out to Vegas this past month for the Holy Grail of Projection- CinemaCON. While it has come and gone, all the big players in the industry flexed their collective projection super-powers and impressed the industry once again. HFR and laser seems to be where we’re headed and it figured big at Cinemacon. So of course- Barco threw their skin in the game:
Barco, the global digital cinema technology leader, impressed hundreds of attendees at this year’s CinemaCon, demonstrating ultra-bright 4K laser projection, a never-before-seen exhibition of High Frame Rate movie footage at 120 fps per eye, its premier 3D multi-channel cinema audio solution, and a stunning 3D projection mapping show on Caesars Palace. Integrated Visions Projectionmaps Miami

OK, not the whole city….but a large chunk of the Hotel InterContinental got the VIP treatment from Integrated Visions and Senovva during the Ultra Music Festival last week. The project called ‘Red Bull Mind-Meld’ experience featured custom animations and footage that spanned 20,000 s.f. of the side of the building. As far as I know, this one ranks right up there with some of the largest projectionmappings in the US done so far- at least in terms of sheer size. IVP produced content (more…)

Tigrelab Talk Show Set Mapping

In what is, perhaps, not so much “videomapping” as “audio-reactive virtual set design”, TV3 produced two very special interviews featuring the scientist and broadcaster Eduard Punset and the presenter and humourist Andreu Buenafuente. The programmes, which generated considerable expectation and required a significant investment, consisted of conversations between Punset and Buenafuente about a range of issues concerning everyday life set against a video mapping projection of almost 100 m2. Tigrelab was chosen to develop the contents of the backdrop, an audiovisual “wall” 24 metres wide and 3.5 metres high. This reactive and continuously changing scene allowed the two men to continue to talk comfortably whilst they were taken from place to place…from a modernist library, to a New York building, to being surrounded by a futurist mesh created using images of codes.

Words like love, city, brain, future formed the basis of the production that was accompanied by live conversation. A total of 20 different spaces were created. The programme was recorded in front of a studio audience for subsequent broadcast, allowing Buenafuente and Punset to talk freely whilst the producer “transported” them to different scenes based on where their conversation took them. Tigrelab proposed an audio-reactive backdrop developed by WeLoveCode using Processing. The system was reactive, allowing for the images to change depending on what was being said. This broke new ground in the field of interactive set design for television. The image was divided into two parts that were connected to left-right stereo audio, one side for each of the participants. The technical department created the montage for the projection and management of the video mapping using three Barco FLM 20K HD projectors and the WatchOut 5 program, offering considerable flexibility to the producer. While ‘green-screen’ technology has been around forever, I love that this concept flips that idea completely around…

3D in the Darkroom

Motion graphics house The Darkroom (PF article on Glastonbury) were commissioned for the Sunburn festival in Goa by Percept D’mark to come up with a stage design and and perform live video mapping on it over 3 nights. The result was aptly named the “Cubezoid Stage” and by the end of the festival was voted by the public as the best stage at the festival. On the final night 20,000 pairs of 3D glasses were distributed to the punters and the the first 20 minutes of Axwell’s set was projected in 3D.

3 HD projectors, 3 Arena Media servers, a whole bunch of 3d! (Speaking of Arena, here’s a review I did for PLSN….) and make sure to check out their website for some pretty good examples of their work…

UVA Updates d3- Designer is here…

d3dongle

The United Visual Artist’s powerful d3 system underwent some changes recently. They now offer a software only version- dubbed ‘d3 Designer’ that allows designers to use the power of d3′s pre-viz capabilities on their own machine, and then run it on a server later. Right now, d3 is spec’ed for a Windows environment (or Mac running Windows). d3 was previously only available as a software/hardware bundle. The new d3 Designer is a software only solution that has all the powerful features of d3 but with the outputs water marked. Made specially for show creators; content designers; projectionists; project managers and other video production professionals, d3 Designer is the most advanced integrated production platform in the market. Created to design and simulate your show from concept design to delivery. Shows created on d3 Designer are transferable to both 2U and 4U d3 production systems. d3’s real-time stage simulator also allows for pre-vis of moving screens and props, giving you full control of your show – on the train, or the plane, or even in your hotel. All the power of d3 (more…)

Indy Opera Goes to the Movies

While not quite the same scale as Aida at the RAH, the Indianapolis Opera is in full swing this week and the program is entitled “Opera Goes to the Movies”. The idea is to have a massive movie screen and play clips of various movies that have music from operas….combine that with live singers, a live orchestra, and IMAG and you get the idea. For my part I get to set up, align, and generally babysit two Christie HD 12k’s. All the clips and editing by Derek Tow of South 40 Productions.

The general size of the screen when combined with the physical depth of our stage dictated .73:1.0 lenses which, if you’ve ever had to use them on a big gun Christie, are not the most cooperative of glass. The PJ’s had to be center of screen, which in this case was 18′ so scaffolding had to be done as you can see in the following pics (No, there’s no Pandora’s box on this gig, I just use their totally useful grids). These HD12k’s don’t have Twist or warp, or even enhanced keystone correction, so all the convergence is manual. Big tip for anyone using a rental like these- shoot some lithium grease into the rigging feet and screws before stacking them and sending them in the air! You’ll save a ton of hassle and have less blisters. Trust me. All playback is coming from 2 iMacs (primary and backup) using Playback Pro + running into a Panasonic AV-HS400 and sent down the line HD-SDI. We’re using a 24′ jib, a 33x Canon on sticks, and my Vaddio HD19 cameras for IMAG. Surprisingly- the little PTZ cams look pretty good!

Indianapolis Opera’s executive director John Pickett says that during the planning of this year’s season they wanted to present four entries yet include something that was on a lesser scale financially, while attracting newer audiences at the same time. That’s how Opera Goes to the Movies came about.

“It will be a great situation for people who like film and understand the role that music and opera have played in it. However, they may have never tried or have had limited experience with live opera singing with an orchestra. I think people who are new to opera will love it because it is a lot of the greatest hits of opera that they know or have heard. It will give them some context about it,” says Pickett, who also thinks that the singing “will be of high enough caliber that the ‘foamers’ (those who foam at the mouth or get excited about opera) and aficionados of opera will enjoy it too.”

The Visual Drugstore Invades North Africa

The Visual Drugstore invaded North Africa last month on a mission dubbed ‘MMOVΞ’ to travel, experience, and project onto, the desert and any structures that presented themselves. Mar-K.os and crew loaded up the world’s most tricked out mobile projection platform, the MMOV, and some trailing vehicles and headed out for a month of cruising the dunes to project onto whatever they could find. Love this!

V Squared Labs Reveals the Scion FR-S

I’m a huge fan of Vello Virkhaus’ (V Squared Labs) work and it seems he’s lent his touch to a car reveal. Projection on cars has been in the news a bunch recently- I guess everyone just jumps on the bandwagon at some point, but I happen to like it. Cars are perfect for this type of treatment….sleek lines, interesting shapes, smallish (so a really bright projector can look great), and you can use a lot more than 1 or 2 projectors if need be. V Squared Labs put their touch on this reveal for Scion and while they (more…)

Christie Digital Solaria Shines for ESPN 3D

BCS3d1

At CES yesterday the Christie Digital Solaria CP2230 3D was the star.  ESPN 3D along with RealD and Christie screened the BCS National Championship game between the LSU Tigers and the Alabama Crimson Tide at the Las Vegas Hilton theater using  two of the powerful projectors for an incredible 3D sports experience. Christie’s collaboration with ESPN 3D highlights the enormous possibilities of digital cinema, which is allowing theaters to increase their revenue streams by beaming in alternative content such as sports, concerts and cultural events, in addition to showing major studio releases.

I’m not even a sports fan and I’d pay to see something like this….actually golf has a big appeal for this type of technology but I digress… (more…)
